VANCOUVER — 154 Rural and remote BC communities will get access to a new or faster internet through a $45 million investment. Of those communities, 44 First Nations will benefit. Governments of Canada and British Columbia made the announcement today that new subsea fibre optic cable will connect communities between Prince Rupert and Vancouver. The hope is that the investment will help residents of these communities connect with family and friends, do business online and participate in remote education. it will also help connect schools, hospitals, libraries and business to networks that are essential to their services.

“Reliable high-speed connectivity is critical for rural and remote communities to develop their business opportunities, services and community potential,” said Joel McKay, Northern Development Initiative Trust CEO.

Denise Williams, Executive Director of First Nations Technology Council says, “Connectivity is foundational to Indigenous peoples leading and thriving in a digital age.”
