PRINCE GEORGE –  An organization devoted to helping women get higher education is celebrating a milestone. The P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is a U.S.-based international women’s organization of about 230,000 members, with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. The group was started by seven women in 1869 and this year is celebrating it’s 150th anniversary.

Here in Prince George there is a chapter of almost 20,  who have been active in the community for 49 years.

Roma Tingle has been with the group for 45 years, and has helped support countless women on their quest for higher education through scholarships, grants, awards and loans – “there’s about 6,000 chapters and 230,000 members in the United States and Canada, so it’s an incredible growth for an organization, all women supporting women’s education and supporting each other.”

The local chapter plans to celebrate the 150th with a party this weekend.
