PRINCE GEORGE — Ways to reduce food waste is on the mind of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George with the Love Food, Hate Waste initiative. The Regional District announced its support for the program at its latest board meeting and is the most recent example of waste reduction efforts around Prince George.

“Of that waste hierarchy, or the three R’s, you have reduce, reuse, recycle,” explained RDFFG Waste Diversion Program Leader, Rachael Ryder. “I think sometimes we just tend to jump to recycle. So being able to promote a program that is getting us to reduce, I think, is a great start because we’re actually preventing that waste production to begin with.

Each year, the average Canadian home wastes 140 kilograms of food, costing more than $11,000.

While this deals with food waste in the home, the Salvation Army is also doing its part to reduce waste. Its Food Recovery Program has been going on for about a year and the benefits are two-fold. Instead of throwing out food unable to be sold, it is donated to local farmers who will then return the favour with goods such as produce and meats.
