Pothole season has arrived

PRINCE GEORGE – They have started popping up all around the city in the spring and we don’t mean crocuses.

Potholes are a perennial thing on city streets, but the City has had to fill fewer of them as the road rehabilitation budget is maintained at over five million dollars per year.
Pothole Repairs:
Year:                       Road Rehab:                  Pothole Repairs:
2011                       $3.5 million                      12,847
2014                       $7 million                         17,896
2015                       $7 million                         20,150
2018                       $5 million                          6,913

However, the Manager of Streets says the lack of a freeze-thaw cycle this winter means fewer potholes as well.

“Weather played a role,” says Blake McIntosh. “We didn’t really didn’t have a lot of freeze-thaw events from January to present day. That plays a big role. The less water there is on the roadways the less potholes there’ll be.”
But the icy winter means there is plenty of gravel on the roads. McIntosh says work collecting that gravel will begin fairly soon.
